23/24 Epic League - Aurora chapter vs Blood Axes

  Last match of the first round. This time it's the two airborne lists that face of. The low in number Aurora chapter vs the numerous but fragile kopter carried Blood Axes.

This time the board was set up with some ruins in the center going from edge to edge. Aurora chapter got to choose side and selected the one with a bit less ruins resulting in a warzone that would take place alongside the ruins. They choose to setup the Whirlwinds and the V & VI squads in the center of the ruins next to their blitz. The rest was put in the Landing Craft. The orks put two kommando squads as garrison and their lobba blitz brigade in the center close to the blitz objective. The rest close by to try to get protection from the flakwagons AA.






+++ Turn 1 +++

CAS ground attack warband kill 2 grots and a battlewaggon
They then retain the initiative and  do a ground assault with the landing craft filled with a the 1st terminator squad as well as III&IV tactical squad. Resolution 15-5 and the entire ork warband with warboss and all is wiped out. They loose one terminator and one tactical marine.

The orks double their lobba blitz and fire at the newly landed squads as well as getting both the landing craft and the Thunderhawk within range of the AA for the disengage moves. They only however manage to kill one tactical marine stand.

The Whirlewinds fire at the kommandos hiding in the ruins. The manage to damage the kopta and kill one kommando. As a bonus they manage to hit some waggons in the nearby blitz brigade and destroy a a lobba and a flakk waggon.

The kopta blitz try to sustain fire but fails. Does a normal fire instead at the Heavy tacticals. Kill another marine and break the formation.

The V&VI squad choose to go on overwatch anticipating a strike against the nearby Whirlwinds.

This fore the Kommando group A hiding in the cliffs to double forward but hide behind the nearby ruins so V&VI can't see them. But still fire att the Whirlwinds. All shoots miss however.

The Aurora chapter is now out of activations.

The Kommando group B in the ruins try to marshal but fails and do a regroup as Hold action.

The final Kommmados, group C, double and hide behind the central ruin. The koptas big kannon fire a pot shot at the Whirlwinds but miss. Still it is a blast marker.


The last thing that happens is that the ork Bommer roars in and drop their load on the Whirlwinds finally destroying one of them. At the same time the stormboyz drop down into the ruins close by the Whirlwinds. Drawing the V&VI squads overwatch fire. Losing one.

In the end phase does all Aurora chapter formations rally as well as the Stormboyz and Kommando group B. Rest fails. The Thunderhawk get damage by the orks flakk and all aircraft exit on wrong edge and get extra blastmarks.


+++ Turn 2 +++

Orks, to some surprise, wins the initiative.

The Kommando group A engage the whirlwinds. Destroying all of them and loose two kommandos. 

On the other side of the board does the III&VI squad advance and fire at the big blitz brigade. Manage to only kill a single lobba, but that's enough to break them. They fall back towards the orks blitz objective.

This bring them close enough to Kommando group B in the ruins that tries to Engage them. But they fail and fire instead. All miss.

The Thunderhawk had to stand down.

The kopta blitz brigade try the virtual impossible. A sustain fire action with orks. And fail predictable. They do a fire at the Terminators as the hold action. Actually killing one of them.

The Landing Craft also has to stand down.

The Bommer gets up in the air and attack the V&VI squad at the Arora side of the field. They miss completely.

The V&VI squad instead try to do a sustain fire at the nearby Kommandos but fail and end up with a normal fire. The ruins blocking the view cause all shots to miss. 

As a response does the C group Kommandos double to the other side of V&VI squad setting up a crossfire with A group. They manage even thou poor shooting to destroy a Land Raider.

The Terminator formation optioned between Engaging or Sustain fire at the koptas in the ruin park. They decide on sustain fire on the ground that more dices would be tossed and they are a bit few. All of the vehicles in the formation got hit but by some miracle all the koptas manage their save and only a skorcha and a buggy goes. Enough to break them nevertheless. 

The orks had set up the V&VI squad for an destructive engagement by the Stormboyz. However a 1 was rolled and with no Warlord left to beat them into line they squabble among themself instead. At least regrouping and getting rid of blast markers.

By some small miracle does all formation manage to rally. It is close. The Aurora chapter is one VC up for turn three but they are hard pressed on their side of the board with only one formation that survived turn 2 by sheer luck.

Aurora wins the initiative

The Thunderhawk ground attack the  group C Kommandos. Kill 1 Kommando and have one shot going through the big koptas armor. Critical hitting it. When the kopta blows the rest of the kommandos break fleeing towards the rear objective. Thereby reliving V&VI squads quite a bit.

The big blitz double and fire at III&VI squads. Missing.

V&VI want to clean up around the blitz but fail the activation. Fire at Kommandos squad A. Missing again.

Kommandos squad B wants to sustain fire at the nearby heavy tactical but it is to complicated for orks. They fail ending up with some normal fire instead. Two shot hits but the thick armor of the Land Raiders are not so easily penetrated. 

III&IV squad doubles around the ruin. Towards the ork blitz objective. Destroy last buggy breaking koptas again.

Over the heads of the fleeing koptas the ork  Bommer roars down laying barrage on the III&IV squad. Killing last marine. Break remaning the two remaining Land raiders.

Landing craft does a ground assault near the broken koptas. Wiping them out. Lands next to the orks blitz objective. 

The Kommando group A on the other side on the battlefield double (just to make the activation). Fire at V&VI squad. The big kopta popping up over the terrain to get a better field of view. Not help at all, missing everything.

The terminators mount up in the Land Raiders daring a double move through the broken ground of the park. Making it and now control the ork blitz.

The Stormboyz finally manage to engage V&VI squads. But with only group A nearby supporting them it ends up in a fiasco. Only one marine killed and all stormboyz slaughtered.

In the end the Aurora chapter has two victory conditions Bliz+BTS the orks only has Blitz. It's turn three victory for the Aurora chapter.
The space marines won by a really hard strike against the orks main warband giving them both a quick victory condition as well as a foothold close to the ork blitz. 
They where however hard pressed the rest of the game with alot of orks swarming their side of the board but with the loss of the ork Warlord the luck was not with the orks and they mange to hold the kommandos at bay.
